News from the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy

Noteworthy

The Adkerson School of Accountancy continues to be among the nation’s best. In August, the 2019 Commerce Clearing House Public Accounting Report (PAR) once again ranked our graduate and undergraduate programs in the top ten for schools of similar size. Furthermore, both ASAC programs were named to PAR’s top 25 in the South, regardless of size.

Alumnus and school namesake Richard Adkerson (eighth from left), CEO of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., visited campus last spring, when he spoke to graduate assistants and undergraduates. Later, he hosted some students and faculty at the MSU v. LSU baseball game.

Graduate student Katie Bostick and undergraduate Matthew Ferris were selected as recipients of 2019-2020 Mississippi Society of CPAs (MSCPA) Student Scholarships. The MSCPA Education Foundation awarded each $2,500.

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) named graduate student LaDarrion Grant a PCAOB Scholar. The national recognition includes a $10,000 scholarship.

Undergraduate student Kyanna Hollin was awarded an AICPA Scholarship Award for Minority Accounting Students. The scholarship is part of the American Institute of CPAs’ Legacy Scholars Program.

Congratulations to ASAC faculty members Dr. Josh Hunt and Dr. Emily Hunt, who welcomed baby Ethan Wayne Hunt on August 16, at 6 pounds 13 ounces!

Recent accounting graduate Shawna Marceleno was named Outstanding Undergraduate Student in the MSU-Meridian Division of Business. Recognized at the campus’ May 2 commencement, she is now an Internal Auditor at Commercial Bank.

Alumnus Jason Morgan was named the MSCPA Gold Award winner at the organization’s June convention in Destin, FL.  Morgan, who is now in practice with GranthamPoole, earned the recognition for achieving the top score on the CPA Exam in Mississippi. Shown here at the convention are (from left) Associate Clinical Professor Dr. Clyde Herring, ASAC Director Dr. Shawn Mauldin, Morgan and Instructor Angela Pannell.

Dr. Shawn Mauldin, along with the ASAC Advisory Council, presented alumnus Allen Poole with a hand-painted cowbell featuring McCool Hall, in appreciation for his recently completed service as President of the Council. Poole is Senior Vice President-Global Tax at Sedgwick in Memphis. Now presiding is alumnus Jerry Goolsby, a Partner at BKD.

In 2019, alumna Jackie Turner was appointed as Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security by Governor Phil Bryant. She also serves on the board of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies as Treasurer.
