A Little Bulldog Banter in Memphis

Enjoying the Memphis alumni gathering were (from left) College of Business Senior Director of Development Rob Jenkins, ASAC Director Shawn Mauldin, legendary former MSU baseball coach Ron Polk, alumnus David Hopkins and Dean Scott Grawe.

It was a fun and exciting evening! Fifty-two alumni and friends gathered at the Chickasaw Country Club in Memphis in October to visit with each other and to hear what was new in the College of Business and the Adkerson School of Accountancy.

Director Shawn Mauldin was on hand to update guests on happenings within the School and introduce them to Dean Scott Grawe.

“This event has sparked a great deal of interest in what we’re doing at the Adkerson School of Accountancy,” says Mauldin. “It’s a special opportunity for us to spend time with alumni and even meet some new people. I’m glad the dean was able to join us. We’re very grateful to the ASAC Advisory Council members and alumni who put this together and look forward to doing these type events more regularly.”

David Hopkins, a 1986 alumnus and Advisory Council member, graciously gave of his time to organize and host a spectacular evening.

“We had a successful event in 2019 with great hopes of doing it again in 2020, but then COVID delayed us,” he shares. “This past spring I told the Advisory Council that I would commit to an event in Memphis again this year. We invited Coach Ron Polk to speak. It was a really enjoyable night, and the alumni are eager to do it again in 2025.”

Joining Hopkins in spearheading the gathering were Clark Price, Sherri Swindle, Stephen Woo, Hunter Meriwether and Joe Brown.

The Advisory Council is hoping to create similar events in the metros where there are clusters of accounting alumni. The model created in Memphis will serve them well.

Hopkins was pleased with the generational mix who turned out. From recent graduates to those who were well into their retirement years, everyone enjoyed the time spent getting to know their fellow accounting Bulldogs.

“We were eager to share with the group those things that differentiate our program from others in the country,” says Hopkins about the ultimate goal of the event. “They can help us continue to attract quality students into our program.”
